Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was the crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. The name "Checkpoint Charlie" was founded by the Western Allies to call the crossing point between East and West Berlin. To the present day, there is now a Checkpoint Charlie Museum where Checkpoint Charlie was located. On October 22, 1961, an American official was heading to East Berlin to see the opera. On this date, the American official E. Allan Lightner was halted in his car because he was crossing through Checkpoint Charlie, but he had an "occupation forces" license plate. There was a standoff at Checkpoint Charlie with Soviet and American tanks facing off. ("Standoff at Checkpoint Charlie." Standoff at Checkpoint Charlie. Western Allies Berlin, n.d. Web. 10 Mar. 2014.)
